Global Happiness Agenda
  1. Why are Colombian, Algerian & Ethiopian children so much happier than British Children? (ref. Children’s Worlds survey) Why are South Korean children so unhappy?
    1. These countries have poor infrastructure, poor state provision, poor social services, limited access to health care, and low GDP per capita, but it seems that the extent of material comforts a child enjoys has little impact on their level of happiness?
    1. A society that is rich enough not to worry about providing the basics for should be setting goals of personal happiness and fulfillment NOT purely economic growth.
    1. Everyone should be happy and excited by life, not anxious, fearful, and stressed.
    1. A new Utopian society will be created by encouraging everyone to fulfill their potential and achieve their dreams.
  1. Family, Friends & Community:
    1. Those with close relationships are happiest: families should not be encouraged to live apart (ie. Children expected to leave home). Independence does not mean isolation.
    1. Contributing to the community and mucking in together leads to fulfillment: a key determinant of happiness is a strong sense of community and belonging, which can be provided through friends, colleagues or family.
    1. Altruism is proven to help focus beyond ourselves and enable us to be more connected with the world around us.
  1. Compassion:
    1. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." (Dalai Lama).
    1. Turn thoughts to others. Research consistently shows that acts of kindness and generosity have beneficial effects of people's well-being.
  1. Long Hours culture to end:
    1. Ruins family life, and limits the potential of women to maximise their potential in the workplace.
    1. Discriminates against women.
    1. Make Output not Input the measure of workplace success. Anyone who hangs around late in the office is obviously inefficient and therefore not worthy of promotion.
    1. The working late in the office long hours culture is undermining the family and fails to allow individuals to enjoy the benefits of a free and affluent society.
    1. Recruitment of individuals into services and business will look far more at ‘output’ rather than ‘input’, thus creating a more efficient, productive and happier workforce.
    1. Executives who work long hours will be regarded as socially irresponsible, and questions will be asked about their efficiency and suitability.
    1. The 3-Day Week in the 1970's showed how productivity increased hugely when hours were restricted. Shorter working hours will naturally lead to a huge increase in productivity and enable all the social benefits of shorter working hours.
    1. Businesses always naturally invest more to raise productivity when labour is tight.
    1. Goal of a 4-day week.
  1. Stop the commuting nightmare:
    1. With modern communications, a majority of office jobs could be done from home.
    1. More flexible commuting times is obvious. Not everyone needs to arrive at 9am: it is a throwback to an outdated mode of working on the factory floor when everything had to be synchronised.
    1. It is estimated that stopping commuting in the UK would lead to a productivity boost of £12 billion.
  1. End the Fearful & Suspicious Society
    1. Abolish the Tyranny of Fear: an unholy alliance of feminists, press, schools and government have combined to stir up a wholly unwarranted atmosphere of anxiety and suspicion, because it suits their agenda.
    1. Women and children are being repressed and their rights eroded despite the evidence that statistically they are much safer when out on their own than at home or with people they know!
    1. Exemplified by the completely irrational stranger-danger fixation by parents toward their children, the worst child abuse scandals around the world are perpetrated by friends, relations, institutions, celebrities and authority figures, NOT from unknown strangers.
    1. We will get children back out exploring and playing on their own, while dealing with the biggest threat to their health: roads and traffic. Traffic free Safe zones will be created for children in all towns and cities.
    1. We will create a world where everyone feels they can go and travel wherever they like and talk with whoever they like.
    1. We will create a society at ease with itself that looks outwards and gets citizens to do what the human spirit does best: to ask how they can help and contribute to their community and the world.
  1. An end to the media & cultural obsession with Violence
    1. Books, TV, movies and games are hugely imbalanced towards violent imagery: there is an obsession with murder, serial killings, hit-men etc.
    1. Crosses all levels: so-called quality literature, journalism, or drama is just as obsessed with violence.
    1. However, while casual violence is shown to even young people, there is moral outrage and prurience about nudity and sexual imagery.
    1. We will create a better society that is less inhibited about nudity and sexuality but more outraged by violent content across all age groups, but especially children.
    1. The old hippy mantra of make love not war will be the starting point!
