1) As more and more MPs and influential figures (eg. JM Keynes) became persuaded by this //New Liberalism//, the Liberal Party split 3 ways in the 1930s: the //Liberal Nationals// (who's MPs slowly moved over to the Conservatives), the //New Liberals// (who's supporters migrated to //Labour//), and finally the //Independent Liberals// who maintained a rump of //True Liberals//.
1) have been wiped out electorally ever since.

1) 2010 saw the LibDems become part of a coalition government again, but in the process they repeated the mistakes of the //National// coalition governments of the 1930s by supporting a series of Conservative and //statist// measures. Noone knew what they stood for aagain, and the result was the same: wipeout at the subsequent election.

===**The UK LibDems descent toward Socialism...**===
1) Arguably the //First World War// that forced the UK Liberal government of the day into a series of //illiberal// measures sowed the seeds for their ultimate collapse of the Liberal Party.
1) The strains within the party had been growing for sometime however with the late 19th century growth of //New Liberalism// which advocated state intervention.
1) As more and more MPs and influential figures (eg. JM Keynes) became persuaded by this //New Liberalism//, the Liberal Party split in the 1930s, and have been wiped out electorally ever since.
1) The Liberal Movement looked for new direction, and became more socially democratic. At that point the world ‘Liberal’ began to be associated with socialism.

===**3 Examples of the UK LibDems abandonment of 'Liberalism'...**===
Deletions:
===**The UK LibDems descent into Social Democracy**===
1) Backdrop of Liberals as one of 2 main parties (led by Gladstone) throughout 19th century. Liberal values of self-help and freedom of choice, equality of opportunity, free trade and internationalism along with limited government intervention would bring down old authoritarian governments etc
1) 1st World War/Great Depression changed all that: Labour party was formed (it was to replace Liberals as main party of opposition to Conservatives), also huge growth of support for radical anti-capitalist systems ie socialism and its offspring communism and fascism - Liberal Democracy seen as not the solution (growth of nationalism and isolationism)
1) So growth of fascism and communism (pre- and post 2nd World War) squeezed out Liberalism. Statist economic and social policies became the norm, and governments on both sides began to tamper with planning. Also paranoid fear in democratic nations led to restrictions on freedom.
1) Liberal Movement looked for new direction, and became more socially democratic. At that point the world ‘Liberal’ began to be associated with socialism.
1) Time now right for re-emergence of true Liberalism - failure of the ruling class etc (see above) and the myth of the trusted elite in control who would guarantee economic success was exposed by the financial collapse of 2008.
